Adrenal Tumours/ Laparoscopic adrenalectomy in Mumbai, India
The adrenal glands are triangular-shaped, yellow-colored glands found above both the kidneys. Their function is to produce hormones like estrogen, progesterone, steroids, cortisol, and cortisone, and other chemicals like adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine.
The hormones produced by adrenal glands help in fluid and salt regulation of the body, blood pressure, muscle development, sexual drive and sugar metabolism. They also secrete adrenaline. A person can survive with one adrenal gland too. Surgical removal of the adrenal gland called as an adrenalectomy which is now routinely performed through laparoscopy- laparoscopic adrenalectomy.

Pheochromocytoma and hyperaldosteronism are other conditions requiring an adrenalectomy. Usually an endocrinologist is deeply involved in the decision making process and in case of adrenal surgeries, the surgeon, anesthetist and the endocrinologist work together as a team.

Surgical treatment of adrenal tumors/ laparoscopic adrenalectomy
Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a surgical technique used to remove the adrenal gland through tiny sub-centimetre cuts. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a technically demanding procedure that requires specialized skills in advanced laparoscopic operations and training. It is advantageous as it offers a much better view of the gland and its surroundings than one can get with open surgery.
Laparoscopic adrenalectomy involves the insertion of a telescopic camera through a small 1 cm cut in the abdominal wall. Additional small incisions are made through which instruments are inserted to perform the surgical procedure. The specimen is then placed into a small bag and taken out from the abdominal cavity through one of the incisions.
